| Major Greg Mikesell United States Army Retired Black Watch Coach and SAI August 1986 – June 2002 |
| On June 30th 2002, I will retire after serving sixteen years as the Senior Army Instructor and Head Coach of the Charger Battalion. It has been my honor to have developed and coached all our teams, but especially The Black Watch. During those sixteen years we competed in 128 major drill/skills meets and won 96 times, placed second 13 times, third 5 times, and came in fourth thru seventh a total of 14 times. Most of the second thru seventh place finishes came in the first four years when I was just getting the teams developed. In order to put this remarkable run in it's proper perspective, please allow me to tell you about the trophies we won at National's in which we competed from 1994 until this year. The lowest Black Watch ever placed was fourth. We won the National Championship four times, won National Champion Runner-up twice, third one time and fourth place twice. Actually, we won a trophy at National's 71% of the time we competed, won first place (National Champion) 42% of the time, placed second 9%, and third 11%. Our closest competitor won a trophy 53% of the time they competed at National's and won first place only 20% of the time. No other team (Armed) at National's comes close to dominating the way Black Watch did these past nine years. I hope you now have a better understanding of why I consider myself blessed to have coached this super group of boys these past sixteen years. As I close out my teaching and coaching career, please allow me to wish you all God's Speed, and the very best of luck in the future. Always remember, "You are only as good as tomorrow." With my best wishes. |
